Cassville Mushroom Foray
REGISTRATION NOW CLOSED. Join us for a mushroom foray – a morning of foraging for wild mushrooms along a bluff that's high above the Mississippi River, near Cassville in Grant County. Guided by members of the UW-La Crosse Mycology Club, the workshop will give participants the opportunity to share their findings and get assistance with mushroom identification from knowledgeable mycologists. This event is part of the Conservancy’s 2023 “Linked to the Land” series of outdoor experiences on the many nature preserves we protect for wildlife habitat, scenic beauty, climate resilience, and recreation in the Driftless Area.
Mushroom hunting is a popular way to enjoy the seasons. In September, foragers in Wisconsin’s Driftless Area may be lucky enough to find such varieties as honey mushrooms, chicken-of-the-woods, hen-of-the-woods, turkey tail, and puff ball mushrooms. There are also a number of lookalikes that can be poisonous, so having mycologists available to verify findings is essential before consuming any found mushrooms.
Pack a lunch and allow yourself time to explore Cassville, the Nelson Dewey State Park, and other delights along the Mississippi River on this fall day.
REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED for this FREE event by September 6 (or until filled). With questions, contact Sarah Bratnober at [email protected] or call 608-784-3606 ext 8.
Location details and foraging tips will be sent to all registered participants by email on Thursday, Sept. 7.
